Detailed Description

Tucked in a remote corner of the Dominican Republic's northeast region, Los Haitises is arguably the country's most important national park. This vibrant humid forest is home to certain species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, along with miles of untouched mangrove forests, secluded beaches, ancient caves and the Dominican Republic's most diverse collection of endemic flora and fauna. What was once a sacred, safe haven for the Dominican Republic's original inhabitants, the Taino Indians, is now a mysterious and awe-inspiring draw for tourists willing to leave the beaten track.

The Drive

From Punta Cana / Bavaro we make our way north into the Oriental Mountain Range. Welcoming us is a winding, paved road that snakes through rolling green hills and country hamlets along the southern shores of Samana Bay. Your guide, meanwhile, brings the outside world to life explaining the daily routines of everyday Dominicans and highlighting some of the country's most recognizable natural produce as you pass countless agricultural and cattle farms.

The Hotel

Our ultimate destination is the incomparable Paraiso Caño Hondo Hotel, located just outside the town of Sabana de la Mar, and inside Los Haitises National Park. The 28-room Paraíso Caño Hondo blends into its natural surroundings, with a rustic architecture, making the hotel look as if it were born from the forest. Caño Hondo is your only opportunity to stay within the perimeters of Los Haitises and the experience is well worth it.

Everything Los Haitises is reflected at Caño Hondo. A cool, natural river, born in the park's highlands, transverses the hotel grounds creating numerous waterfalls for you to enjoy. The hotel's menu tells quirky tales of indigenous words and fabled stories of the area. It also highlights the regions typical dishes like crab, conch and minuta, a small fresh water fish that is enjoyed, locally, seasoned and fried. Fresh natural fruit juices are rotated daily: lime, melon, mango, tamarind, pineapple, etc. Rooms either overlook the San Lorenzo Bay and Samana mountains, in the distance, or hug the natural river that rambles through the grounds. Each room is named after birds that can be found in the park (there are some 200 species in Los Haitises). Upon arrival you can enjoy the hotel waterfalls, bars or try your hand at some of the available extra activities: zip lining and rock wall climbing. Lunch and dinner are included on the first day as well as breakfast and lunch on the second. After dinner, we'll enjoy a nighttime bonfire under a blanket of starts; light pollution is a non factor.

The Excursion

After breakfast, in the morning, we'll take an excursion deep into Los Haitises National Park. Aboard a catamaran, we wind through the maze of mangrove canals before the park opens up into the San Lorenzo Bay with photo-inspiring views of the park's lush outcroppings and the mountains of Samana as the backdrop. If we're lucky, we may even have some company as dolphin sightings are not uncommon. Our catamaran then takes us to two caves once used by Taino Indians for more than a millennium. The first, Cueva de la Arena, is located on a secluded beach with several waterfront caverns boasting Taino petroglyphs and bats in their natural habitat. The second, Cueva de la Linea, is located deeper in the forest and is brimming with Taino drawings, giving us a better understanding of their world over 500 years ago.

After the excursion, we'll have lunch and then then more free time to enjoy the hotel and its installations. As all good things to come to an end, we depart for Punta Cana / Bavaro in the afternoon.

Join us for this incredibly unique opportunity to spend an unforgettable night within one of the Dominican Republic's most secluded and important national parks.
